Buying basmati rice: five details to agree before comparing prices
A rice quotation is only comparable when the underlying specification is comparable. Before deciding which offer is cheaper, agree the variety, processing, broken percentage, packing, and delivery terms in writing.
This is a procurement guide from OneRice, a product of Bismillah Rice Mills in Hafizabad, Pakistan. It is not a price forecast or a statement of destination-country import rules.
1. Name the variety
“Basmati” describes a category, not a complete purchasing specification. APEDA describes basmati as long-grain aromatic rice with distinctive cooking characteristics. Buyers still need to identify the variety they want and the product characteristics their customers expect.
For an enquiry to OneRice, specify whether you are considering 1121 or 1509. If you are comparing several suppliers, use the same named variety across all offers. Ask how crop year, storage, appearance, and cooking performance will be agreed and checked.
2. Confirm the processing
Write the processing method on the quotation and order. OneRice discusses steam and white rice requirements. Do not assume that a variety name also identifies how the rice has been processed.
Ask for a sample and assess it using your intended cooking method. Agree the appearance and cooking result you need before committing to a shipment. A product suitable for one restaurant or retail channel may not be the preferred choice for another.
3. Define broken percentage and quality checks
An offer for 2% broken and an offer for 5% broken are different specifications. Ask the supplier to state the agreed limit and the method used to assess it. Also agree moisture limits and the treatment of foreign material, damaged grains, and other quality parameters relevant to your market.
Avoid accepting an undefined claim such as “premium quality” as a substitute for a measurable specification. Record the approved sample, inspection arrangements, and how any discrepancy will be handled.
4. Include packing in the comparison
Confirm the net weight per bag, bag material, inner liner if required, artwork, label language, and whether you need private-label packing. Clarify which costs are included in the rice price and who approves the final artwork.
Packing must also meet the rules of the importing market. Confirm local requirements with your importer or qualified agent before printing a full production run. Do not assume an export-ready bag is automatically compliant in every country.
5. Match delivery and payment terms
Compare offers on the same delivery basis and named place or port. For example, an FOB offer and a delivered offer include different responsibilities and costs. Use the relevant Incoterms rule and edition explicitly, rather than relying on a short label alone.
Agree shipment timing, documentation, payment method, currency, quotation validity, and any inspection requirements. Freight and import charges should be separately understood before estimating a landed cost.
